Eleven ATL Records to Listen for in May

BY MOE CASTRO, Latest Disgrace

The Wild - Dreams Are Maps

April arrived with all the signs of being one of the better local music months of the year, and for the most part it delivered. Although in fairness, much of the credit needs to be placed in the hands of records that arrived unexpectedly. Yes, there was excellent new music from such eagerly-awaited sources as HawksSlowriterHalmos and Christ, Lord, but the month just wouldn’t have been the same if Cult RelicBambaraTurf War and Tanner Merritt hadn’t also dropped a whole mess of jewels in our collective laps.

If nothing else, the unveiling of such unsuspected aural delights in the last few weeks should provide additional hope for the month of May, which arrives long on the promise of quality but a little short on quantity. And while any month that brings with it new music from Deerhunter (the local heroes’ fifth album, Monomania) is undoubtedly going to cause a considerable stir, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m just as interested in hearing what new records from the Wild and Powerkompany have to offer. Throw in yet another single from the suddenly prolific Cloudeater and a pair of new cuts from hip-hop collective Wake, and May is starting to shape up rather nicely.
